Opening a dental clinic in India involves navigating registrations, sourcing equipment, hiring staff and building a patient base. This comprehensive checklist walks you through every step.

Step 1: Legal Registration

  • Register as Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP or Pvt. Ltd. with MCA.
  • Obtain a dental registration certificate from your State Dental Council (SDC).
  • Apply for Trade License from your local municipal body.
  • Register for GST (Healthcare services are exempt, but equipment purchases involve input credits).
  • Obtain Fire NOC from local fire department.
  • Clinical Establishment Act registration (mandatory in states where applicable).

Step 2: Clinic Location & Infrastructure

  • Choose a ground floor or accessible location for elderly patients.
  • Minimum 200 sq.ft. for a single chair setup; 400+ sq.ft. for two chairs.
  • Reception, waiting area, operatory and sterilisation room as separate zones.
  • Good lighting, ventilation and access to running water in the operatory.
  • Comply with PCPNDT Act if installing X-ray equipment.

Step 3: Essential Equipment

A complete single-chair setup typically requires:

  • Dental chair unit with air-water syringe and suction
  • Compressor and vacuum pump
  • OPG / RVG digital X-ray unit (register with AERB)
  • Autoclave (Class B recommended) and ultrasonic cleaner
  • Dental operating light
  • Amalgamator, and composite curing light
  • Instrument cassettes and tray systems
