Dental procedures involve significant exposure to blood, saliva and aerosols. Robust infection control protects patients, staff and the practice itself. Here's the complete updated checklist for 2026.

Standard Precautions (Always On)

  • Gloves: Nitrile examination gloves for all patient contact. Change between patients. Double-glove for surgical procedures.
  • Masks: Minimum ASTM Level 2 for routine procedures. N95 FFP2 or higher for aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs).
  • Eye Protection: Goggles or face shield at all times during procedures.
  • Gowns: Fluid-resistant gowns for surgical procedures; clinical coats for examinations.

Instrument Sterilisation Protocol

  • Pre-soak in enzyme solution immediately after use.
  • Ultrasonic cleaning for 10–15 minutes.
  • Rinse, dry and pouch in sealed sterilisation pouches.
  • Autoclave at 134°C for 3 minutes (Class B) or 121°C for 15 minutes (N-type for solid instruments only).
  • Validate autoclave function with biological indicators weekly.

Surface Disinfection

Use a hospital-grade surface disinfectant wipe between patients on all touched surfaces: dental unit controls, chair, light handles, X-ray head, computer keyboard. Phenolic or quaternary ammonium based products are recommended.

Water Lines

Dental unit water lines can harbour biofilm. Flush handpieces for 30 seconds before each patient. Use independent water bottles with sterile water for surgical irrigation. Monitor water line quality quarterly.

Waste Segregation

Sharps (needles, blades): rigid, puncture-resistant sharps containers. Biomedical waste: yellow bags per BMWM Rules 2016. Regular collection by authorised waste disposal agencies — maintain disposal records.

Recommended Products

MedHeal stocks a complete infection control range: Nitrile gloves (Supermax, Ansell), N95 and surgical masks (3M, Moldex), surface disinfectants (Bacillocid N, Perform AF), autoclave pouches and biological indicators.
